Buying Guide
Understanding Certifications
This is the #1 source of confusion for parents. USA Baseball = most recreational and school leagues. USSSA = most travel ball leagues (higher performance). BBCOR = high school and college. Check your league requirements BEFORE buying. Our certification guide explains everything.
Drop Weight Explained
Drop = length minus weight (a 30-inch, 20-oz bat is -10). Lower drop = heavier bat. General guidelines: Ages 5-7: -12 to -13. Ages 8-10: -10 to -11. Ages 11-12: -8 to -10. Ages 13+: -5 to -3. See our drop weight guide for detailed sizing.
Composite vs Alloy
Composite bats have larger sweet spots and less vibration but need break-in (100-200 swings) and can crack in cold weather (<65°F). Alloy bats are hot out of the wrapper, more durable, and cheaper — but have smaller sweet spots and more sting on mishits.
How to Size a Youth Bat
Stand the bat next to your child. The knob should reach their hip. If they can't hold the bat extended with one arm for 30 seconds without dropping, it's too heavy. When in doubt, go lighter — bat speed matters more than bat weight for youth players. See our youth gear checklist for the complete buying list.
