Why Specs Matter More Than Brand
Treadmill marketing focuses on brand and features. But motor quality, belt size, and deck cushioning determine whether your treadmill lasts 10 years or becomes a clothes rack in 6 months. Understanding specs saves you from buying a $2,000 disappointment. Track treadmill runs with a GPS watch using indoor mode.
Motor: CHP Not HP
CHP (Continuous Horsepower) is the real spec. HP (peak) is a marketing number. Minimum: 2.5 CHP for walking, 3.0+ for running, 3.5+ for heavy users or high-speed training. DC motors are quieter; AC motors are more durable (commercial grade).
Belt Size and Quality
Width: 20" minimum for running. 22" for tall or broad runners. 18" is too narrow for anything but walking.
Length: 55" minimum for running. 60" for tall runners or long strides. Too short is genuinely dangerous.
Quality: Multi-ply belts last longer. Look for 2-ply minimum. Commercial treadmills use 3-4 ply.
Deck Cushioning
Good deck cushioning reduces joint impact by 15-40% vs pavement. Important for heavier runners and high-mileage training. Some decks are adjustable between cushioned and firm. Match cushion preference with your shoe selection.
Incline and Speed
Incline: 0-15% is standard. Some offer decline (-3 to -6%) for downhill training. 1% incline approximates outdoor running energy cost.
Speed: 12 mph max covers most runners. Serious sprinters need 15+ mph. Speed response time matters — cheaper motors lag when changing speeds.
