Beginner XC Ski Sizing Guide
Ski length is the most critical decision for beginners. Too long and you can't control them; too short and you sacrifice glide and stability. Classic XC ski sizing is primarily based on height + weight, not just height alone.
Classic Ski Sizing Formula
- Base length: Your height + 15–20cm
- Weight adjustment: For every 10kg over 75kg (for adults), go up 5cm. For every 10kg under 65kg, go down 5cm.
- Example: 170cm tall, 70kg → 170 + 17 = ~187cm ski (round to 190cm)
- Example: 170cm tall, 90kg → 170 + 17 + 5 = ~192cm ski (round to 195cm)
Beginner Sizing Chart
| Skier Height | Light (<65kg) | Average (65–85kg) | Heavy (>85kg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 155cm (5'1") | 165–170cm | 170–175cm | 175–180cm |
| 165cm (5'5") | 175–180cm | 180–185cm | 185–190cm |
| 175cm (5'9") | 185–190cm | 190–195cm | 195–200cm |
| 185cm (6'1") | 195–200cm | 200–205cm | 205–210cm |
Note: Beginners should lean toward the shorter end of their range for better maneuverability. As technique improves, longer skis provide more glide.
Waxless vs Waxable: Always Waxless for Beginners
Waxless skis have a fish-scale (or "crown") pattern in the kick zone underfoot. This texture grips the snow mechanically when weight is applied, providing kick without any wax application. Performance is slightly less than perfectly waxed skis, but it's consistent and maintenance-free.
Waxable skis have a smooth kick zone and require kick wax (or klister for wet snow) applied at the correct temperature. When done right, they grip and glide better than waxless. When done wrong, they either slip or clump with snow. Save waxable skis for when you're an experienced skier who wants to optimize.

What to Avoid as a Beginner
- Racing/elite skis: Too stiff, too narrow, unforgiving on imperfect technique
- Waxable skis: Add complexity without benefit for beginners
- Used SNS Pilot gear: Discontinued system, compatibility dead end
- Skis sized only by height: Weight matters significantly for kick zone compression
- Buying boots last: Boot fit is the most important comfort factor — try them first
