Shoulder Pads Basics
Football shoulder pads protect the shoulder, collarbone, and upper chest from direct blows and ground impact. They must be NOCSAE certified for high school and college play, properly fitted for effectiveness, and position-appropriate for the wearer's role and movement needs.
Types & Designs
| Type | Protection | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Flat-top (skill) | Moderate | QB, WR, DB, RB — maximum arm mobility |
| Cantilevered (linemen) | Maximum | OL, DL, LB — maximum blocking/tackling coverage |
| Hybrid | Good | Versatile use, LB, TE |
Fit & Sizing
Shoulder pads are sized by chest circumference (measured around the largest part of the chest). Most brands offer XS-XXL with matching chest measurements. Key fit checks: epaulets (cap pieces) should cover the acromion (tip of shoulder) but not extend past the deltoid so much as to restrict throwing motion. The sternum pad should sit centered on the sternum, flat, with no gap. Lace closure should be snug — two-finger rule.
