Cleat Types
Football cleats come in three cut styles — high, mid, and low — and with either molded (fixed) or detachable (replaceable) studs. The right choice depends on your position, the field surface, and your ankle stability needs.
Molded vs Detachable
- Molded cleats: Cleats molded directly into the outsole. Lighter, no moving parts, lower cost ($40-100). Best for most players.
- Detachable cleats: Screw-in studs that can be changed for different surface conditions. Better for muddy/wet conditions where longer studs are needed. Higher cost ($100-200). Used by most college and professional players.
Position Guide
| Position | Cut | Priority | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|---|
| QB, WR, DB, RB | Low or mid | Speed, agility, lightweight | Nike Alpha Menace Pro 3, Under Armour Highlight MC |
| OL, DL | High | Ankle stability, traction, durability | Nike Force Savage Pro 2, Riddell High Cut |
| LB, TE, FB | Mid | Balance of mobility and support | Adidas Freak Carbon Mid, Nike Alpha Menace Mid |
Field Surfaces
- Natural grass: Longer molded studs (7-9mm) for penetration. Detachable in muddy conditions.
- Artificial turf: Shorter molded studs or turf-specific (rubber nub) outsole. Long studs on turf = knee injury risk from excessive traction.
- Dry hardpack: Shorter studs. Long studs on hard ground increase ankle sprain risk.
