Steel gauge, hole spacing, weight capacity, and accessories — the specs that matter.

Home Gym Power Rack Buyer's Guide: What to Look For and What to Skip

Why Steel Gauge Matters More Than Brand Name

The power rack holds hundreds of pounds over your head. The engineering matters. Garage Gym Reviews (1.4M subscribers) tested 47 racks and found steel gauge was the single best predictor of durability and stability.

A rack advertised as "1,000 lb capacity" might use 14-gauge steel (1.9mm thick), while one rated at "800 lbs" uses 11-gauge (3.0mm). The thicker steel rack is objectively better built. Weight capacity claims are largely unregulated.

Key Spec

Steel gauge: Lower = thicker. 11-gauge (3.0mm) is commercial grade. 12-gauge (2.7mm) is solid for home use. 14-gauge (1.9mm) is budget territory.

Hole Spacing: The Spec That Affects Every Workout

Hole spacing determines how precisely you can position J-cups and safety bars. Westside hole spacing (1" through the bench zone) is the gold standard. Found on Rogue, Rep Fitness PR-4000/5000. 2" spacing is common on budget racks — workable but not ideal. 3" spacing is too imprecise for serious lifting.
