How We Tested
We set up and slept in 8 tents across 4 campgrounds over 3 weekends — including one rainstorm with 35 mph gusts. We measured setup time, interior space (vs claimed), condensation management, wind stability, and packed weight. All tents were purchased at retail. For comprehensive tent buying knowledge, see our camping tent buying guide.

Detailed Reviews
#1. REI Co-op Half Dome SL 2+ — Best Overall
REI Co-op Half Dome SL 2+ TentEDITOR'S CHOICE
The Half Dome has been a best-seller for over a decade, and the SL 2+ version is the best tent under $200 we've ever tested. DAC pressfit poles, 2 doors + 2 vestibules, near-vertical walls for livable interior space, and a waterproof rating that held through our rainstorm test without a single drip. The 2+ sizing means it actually fits 2 adults with gear — unlike most '2-person' tents.
- Best build quality under $200
- 2 doors + 2 vestibules
- Near-vertical walls = livable space
- Excellent waterproofing (passed rain test)
- REI warranty and support
- $199 pushes budget ceiling
- 4 lbs 12 oz — not ultralight
- REI members get better prices
- Colors are limited
#2. Kelty Dirt Motel 2 — Best Car Camping Value
Kelty Dirt Motel 2 TentBEST VALUE
The Dirt Motel's unique design features a large side door that opens like a porch — perfect for sitting up and enjoying the view. Stargazing fly can be rolled back to expose the mesh ceiling. Setup takes under 5 minutes. At $130, it's the sweet spot of comfort, convenience, and affordability.
- Unique side-opening design
- Stargazing fly feature
- Easy 5-minute setup
- Good ventilation reduces condensation
- Comfortable for car camping
- Too heavy for backpacking (5 lbs 8 oz)
- Vestibule space is limited
- Single wall sections condensate
- Not as weather-worthy as Half Dome
#3. Naturehike Cloud-Up 2 — Budget Backpacking Pick
Naturehike Cloud-Up 2 Ultralight Tent
At $90, the Cloud-Up 2 is the cheapest backpacking-worthy tent that we'd actually recommend. 20D silnylon fly, aluminum poles, 3 lbs 10 oz packed. It's not as durable or weather-resistant as tents costing 3x more, but for fair-weather backpacking, it's a revelation. Hundreds of positive PCT/AT thru-hiker reviews back this up.
- $90 for a legitimate backpacking tent
- 3 lbs 10 oz is genuinely light
- 20D silnylon fly sheds water well
- Compresses small for packing
- Proven by thru-hikers
- Not durable long-term (1-2 seasons)
- Condensation is significant
- Single vestibule
- Tight for 2 adults
#4-8. Additional Picks
Coleman Sundome 4-Person Tent
The most popular camping tent in America for good reason. Room for a family, 10-minute setup, $80. WeatherTec system handles light rain. Not fancy, not ultralight, but reliable and spacious. For car camping with kids, this is the pragmatic choice.
Marmot Tungsten 2P Tent
The most weather-resistant tent in our test. Full seam taping, a burly fly that extends low, and color-coded pole clips. Survived our 35 mph wind test with zero issues. Heavier than the Half Dome (5 lbs) but more confidence-inspiring in storms.
Coleman Instant Cabin 4-Person Tent
Pre-attached poles mean this tent sets up in under 60 seconds — we timed it. Pull it from the bag, unfold, extend poles, done. Sacrifices packed size and weight for convenience. For car campers who hate fiddling with poles and clips, this is life-changing.
Lanshan 2 Pro Ultralight Tent
At 2 lbs 4 oz with trekking pole setup, this is the lightest option in our test. Single-wall design keeps weight down. Requires trekking poles (not included) for setup. Popular with ultralight backpackers and thru-hikers. Not for beginners.
ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 2 Tent
The most livable interior space per dollar. Full-length mesh body for ventilation, 2 doors, 2 vestibules, and an interior that feels larger than its floor area suggests. At $100, it's overbuilt for the price. Our pick for campers who spend time in their tent.

Tent Buying Guide
Car Camping vs Backpacking
If you're driving to your campsite, weight doesn't matter — prioritize space and comfort (Coleman, Kelty). If you're carrying your tent on your back, every ounce counts — go lightweight (Naturehike, Lanshan, REI). See our tent buying guide for detailed comparisons.
Waterproofing: What the Ratings Mean
1,500mm hydrostatic head = light rain. 3,000mm = moderate rain. 5,000mm+ = downpour-proof. All tents in our test rated 1,500mm+, but real-world performance varies with seam sealing quality. The Marmot and REI tents had the best real-world waterproofing.
Size: Always Go Bigger
A "2-person" tent fits 2 adults shoulder-to-shoulder with zero gear space. For actual comfort, buy one size up (2+ or 3-person for 2 adults). The REI Half Dome 2+ nails this — the "+" means usable interior space.
