Choosing a Home Treadmill
Home treadmills range from $300 folding units that shake apart under regular use to $4,000 commercial-grade machines that match gym quality. The right choice depends on your primary use, how often you'll use it, maximum user weight, and what smart features matter to you.
Key Specs to Evaluate
- Motor (CHP - Continuous Horsepower): Walkers/light joggers: 2.0 CHP minimum. Runners: 3.0 CHP minimum. Serious runners: 3.5+ CHP. Underpowered motors overheat and fail prematurely.
- Belt size: Walkers: 16"×46" minimum. Runners: 20"×55" minimum. Taller runners: look for 58"+ length.
- Incline range: 0-12% is standard. Some (NordicTrack X22i) offer up to 40% incline and -6% decline.
- Deck cushioning: More cushioning = gentler on joints. Less cushioning = more road-like feel. Adjustable cushioning is a premium feature.
- Weight capacity: Most home treadmills: 250-350 lbs. Check your weight + 20% buffer.
