Golf Methodology
How TSP Evaluates Golf Training Aids | The Smarter Play
The criteria TSP uses to evaluate golf training aids, including realism, feedback, space fit, durability, and total setup cost.
Evaluation criteria
What matters when we evaluate golf training aids
TSP methodology pages make the review system visible. They show which buying factors count, where we draw limits, and how shopping links are kept separate from editorial selection.
Practice realismThe aid should reinforce a transferable skill, not only make the drill feel entertaining.
Feedback qualityRoll, strike, launch, distance, alignment, or tempo feedback needs to be clear and repeatable.
Space fitRoom length, ceiling height, floor surface, portability, and storage matter as much as features.
DurabilitySurface wear, frame stability, mat memory, net tension, sensor reliability, and warranty support.
Total setup costBase product price, required accessories, replacement parts, subscriptions, and upgrade path.
Skill fitHandicap, practice goal, swing speed, indoor/outdoor use, and time available shape the recommendation.
Review process
How a ranking is built
- Name the practice problem: Start with putting pace, alignment, launch feedback, swing path, net practice, or simulation.
- Separate product types: Do not compare putting mats, launch monitors, nets, and alignment aids as one category.
- Check room and setup limits: Measure whether the product fits common home, garage, office, or range constraints.
- Compare feedback and repeatability: Favor aids that help the golfer identify misses and repeat useful reps.
- Publish upgrade guidance: Explain when a basic aid is enough and when a larger setup is worth the cost.
Evidence labels
How we describe confidence
Not every page uses the same evidence mix. These labels keep hands-on notes, spec review, source review, and commerce checks explicit for the reader.
Hands-on testedUsed when TSP has direct practice notes, setup observations, or durability checks.
Spec and availability reviewedUsed when dimensions, features, pricing, and retailer data drive the ranking.
Source cross-checkUsed when rules, launch data claims, or manufacturer specs need corroboration.
Boundaries
What this methodology does not claim
- Golf training aids can build habits, but coaching and ball-flight feedback still matter.
- Launch monitor and simulator claims depend on setup, lighting, ball choice, and calibration.
- Affiliate links are added after editorial selection and should not determine product rank.
