Metal vs Molded: The Core Decision
The most important cleat decision for softball players is metal versus molded rubber. Metal cleats provide superior grip on natural grass and dirt infields — they dig in, hold, and allow explosive lateral movements. Molded rubber or TPU cleats are legal on all surfaces, more comfortable for extended wear, and required on artificial turf and many recreational leagues.
Metal cleats come in either fixed (non-removable) or interchangeable configurations. Fixed metal cleats are lighter and lower-profile; interchangeable cleats let you swap to molded studs when rules require it. For players who compete in multiple formats, interchangeable systems are worth the premium.

Best Fastpitch Softball Cleats
Fastpitch players need cleats that support quick starts from the base paths, lateral cuts in the field, and stability for pitchers driving off the rubber. Low-cut profiles dominate for outfielders and middle infielders; mid-cut provides ankle support for catchers.
New Balance FreshFoam Velo v2 Fastpitch EDITOR'S CHOICE
New Balance's Fresh Foam midsole brings running-shoe-level cushioning to fastpitch cleats — a genuine differentiator for players who take infield grounders for two hours at practice. Available in metal and molded configurations. The metal version provides excellent grip on dirt without aggressive digging. Fastpitch-specific last fits narrower than most unisex options.
Best Slowpitch Softball Cleats
Slowpitch leagues prioritize comfort over performance extremes — most players wear molded cleats and want all-day wearability across doubleheaders. Cushioning, wide-width availability, and durable outsoles matter more here than sprint performance.
Under Armour Glyde RM Softball BEST VALUE
The UA Glyde is the best value molded cleat for recreational slowpitch — durable rubber outsole, reasonable cushioning, and wide-width availability. UA's softball lasts run a bit wider than Nike and Adidas, making this a popular choice for players who struggle with narrower fits. Holds up well through a full season of twice-weekly league play.
Softball Cleat Fit Guide
Softball cleats should fit snugly in the heel with approximately half an inch of space at the toe. Unlike running shoes, cleats should not have significant forward slide — any heel lift in cleats causes blisters on base-path sprints. Lace them firmly through all eyelets.
For pitchers specifically: ensure the pitching toe (the toe that drags during delivery) doesn't overhang the cleat platform. Pitchers often size up half a size on the pitching-foot shoe to prevent toe drag damage to expensive cleats.
